Easy Homemade Remoulade Sauce

If you want the best tasting remoulade sauce you can find, you’ll have to make it yourself using this super easy homemade remoulade sauce recipe.

Since 2009 I have been making my own condiments & sauces. It started because I wanted healthier options for my family. Recently my sister tweeted “Are there any good remoulade sauces at the store?”

My answer over on Instagram was “Sorry but… No. Make your own.”

Naturally she had to see that coming!

Then my insta-fam started saying things like “I love remoulade sauce. Can you give me the recipe?” & “How do you make remoulade sauce? Is it easy?” & “Is the recipe on your blog?”

It is now!

Easy {Customizable} Remoulade Sauce

Easy Remoulade Sauce Recipe

The best thing about making your own sauce is that it’s completely customizable because YOU control the ingredients. This recipe is just the beginning! Tips to follow on other flavors you can add.

Basic Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2t vinegar
  • 1/2 of a medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • tabasco sauce (or hot sauce) to taste (optional)

The process:

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Whisk until thoroughly combined

THAT’S IT! Truly. That’s all there is to it!

Here’s where the customizable piece comes in…

This easy homemade remoulade sauce has a very basic flavor profile. Here are a few extra options to take it up a notch.

1. Smoke the onions & garlic
You can do this in the oven at 275°- 300° for about 10 minutes, just until soft.
Or on the stovetop. Sauté over medium low heat until translucent.
Let them cool then chop & add to the sauce.

2. Add extra seasoning(s)
For more smokey flavor (which would be great on grilled seafood), add smokey seasoning – click here for that recipe. Other seasonings you can add are cajun spice, mustard

3. Play with your food 😉
Try different ingredients to get the flavor profile you prefer. A few options are:

  1. chopped pickles (for tang) or relish (for a little sweetness)
  2. various vinegars – I like ACV. You could try white or red wine vinegar too. Even rice vinegar for an Asian flair.
  3. speaking of Asian, try horseradish or sriracha in place of the hot sauce.
  4. go Italian with anchovies, capers, or chopped olives. (Mmmm… puttanesca anyone?

Basically, once you get the hang of this super easy homemade remoulade sauce recipe the possibilities are endless! Try it out & let me know what you think!

Serving Suggestions:

Naturally remoulade sauce is excellent for seafood of all kinds. Think outside the box & try in other ways like:

With eggs
As a topper on boiled eggs or to make deviled eggs or even egg salad.
With chicken
Use it in place of ranch sauce to dip hot wings or drizzle over boneless wings. Even try it for chicken salad.
With salad
And since we’re drizzling… why not try it as a ranch dressing substitute for salad & all those recipes that call for ranch dressing.
With tuna
We already know remoulade sauce is perfect with seafood – everything from salmon & tuna steaks to crab cakes & lobster. So no surprise that it can also take your tuna salad to the next level too!
