Eco-Friendly Home Essentials

Eco-Friendly Home Essentials

One of my goals for 2019 & beyond is to continue my sustainability journey by challenging myself to shop less. When I have to shop, I want to buy smarter & greener than I already have been.

Some things are easy enough, I just need to do them more – like thrifting. I love thrift shopping, it’s really a goldmine. But I could definitely buy more secondhand items for our home, garden, & personal use like clothing.

I also want to commit to buying more green products from companies that have a commitment to sustainability like The Grommet.

Since I’m sharing this sustainability journey with you, I want to also share some of the eco-friendly home essentials I either already use, plan to use more, or am starting to use or make.

Since I’m sharing this sustainability journey with you, I want to also share some of the items I either already use, plan to use more, or am starting to use or make.

First up – laundry soap. If you’ve been here before you know that I started making my own soap in 2018 & that I’ve made my own laundry detergent for many years now. I’ve recently come across recipes for homemade soap to use specifically in the laundry & plan to do that a lot more.

For those times when I might be running low on laundry soap & time, I’m trying out these next few items. Soap berries are a big deal in the eco-friendly community because they are all natural fruit from India, completely biodegradeable, & naturally hypo-allergenic.

Next up – journaling. I keep notebooks for everything because I’m a list maker. Last year I went through 3 easily. This year I decided that instead of trying to keep track of everything in 1 journal or notebook, I need to keep a journal for each aspect of my life.

  • Personal & spiritual
  • Home & Garden
  • Business/work

Even having a notebook with sections didn’t make it any easier to keep up with everything before. The only thing I’m a little worried about is having the “right” notebook when & where I need it.

This little notebook would totally solve that problem. With a couple of these, it would be easy to grab the closest 1, then transfer the pages between them or move the pages around within 1 notebook as needed. This is an excellent idea!

And then there’s kitchen essentials. Starting with reusable straws. This is a big deal because plastic straws take FORever to decompose. We switched to stainless steel a couple of years ago & I use them on a daily basis. The kids use paper straws because we don’t want any accidents with them using the rigid stainless.

The paper straws are recyclable & compostable but the problem is always having to buy more. We’ll still use them when we have lots of people over, including kids. Other than that, I prefer these reusable silicone straws.

Another kitchen item I am exploring is food storage. We’ve already {slowly} started replacing plastic containers with glass. And have a set of silicone storage bags that are great for storing ANYthing.

Now we’re adding beeswax food wraps. These are really convenient & easy to store. Pinterest has loads of tutorials on making your own, like this one.

If you’re not the DIY type, you can buy a fancy set with multiple different size & design options.

These are just a few items that my family & I will definitely add the the mix and benefit from.

I talked about some other simple sustainable swaps in this post you can make if you’re just starting out on this journey. Have a look at that & this instagram video to see even more items you can snag for next to nothing.

I’m making 2019 the year we take our sustainability journey to the next level. If you’re working on having a more natural sustainable home too, do you have any products that are making the process easier for you & your family?

Share them in the comments. I love discovering new & innovative solutions.

Until then…
