How & Why To Clean The Dishwasher

Clean the dishwasher?! Yes, yes you should! And NO. No you don’t clean it every time you run it.  Think about it… do you clean a dish towel every time you use it?  What about a washcloth? But those things are actually cleaning other things.  Yeah, I hear ya.  And I get it… Kinda, kinda not.  Because isn’t the dishwasher (and the washing machine) actually cleaning other things too? And especially for non-rinsers, where do you think all the food goes that you don’t actually clean off the dishes first?  Hmmmm. News flash:  soap (or detergent) & water alone do not make ANYthing clean.  As a matter of fact, your soap or detergent…

    How to Make Non-Chlorine Bleach

A few weeks ago, I felt so great about discovering non-chlorine bleach at Target (one of my favorite places ever).  I was so happy and surprised that I just scooped it up without hesitation and kept it moving.  Then on top of that, I check my Cartwheel and find that there is a coupon for it! JOY!!! Fast forward about a week or so…. laundry day and what was pure joy has changed into disappointment.  Then a little disbelief, then some anger. I will just be honest… I was not happy angry with myself for buying this.  Even with a coupon it was still $3+. Read the ingredients.  LOOK what’s in…

    Living The Green Life

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, it’s Spring (finally) and EVERYthing is all about Green!  Green clothes, green food, green BEER (mmm), green grass (is it weird that I love the smell of fresh cut grass?).  All in good fun. I want to talk about green in another sense… our environment.  It’s far too early for green beer, but I’m sitting in my green living room wearing my green crazy socks feeling inspired to talk with you about “Going Green” and living “The Green Life”. I’ve heard it said that “it ain’t easy going green” but what I have noticed over my own journey is that it really isn’t that hard either.…

Perfectly Natural Skin Care That Works

My skin story: I am a 43 year old black woman and I have “normal” skin that tends to get more dry than oily.  For the longest time, I thought it was oily because I had random breakouts of adult acne (and I won’t even start with the stress acne – it SUX).  It bothered me enough to warrant a visit to the dermatologist; I got an Rx that kept me mostly acne free and Glycol to fade any scarring and discoloration. On a follow up visit I asked about natural alternatives – specifically the ones I am about to tell you about.  The answer was an interesting one – she said…

Finally! My Magic Formula for Homemade Dishwasher Tabs!

YAAAAAYYYYYY! Shall I yell it again? YAY! What’s all the excitement about?  THESE!!!! Backstory —> I went almost completely “green” last year, ridding my home of toxic chemicals while still keeping it clean and fresh.  And while I know that I did nothing that hadn’t been done in years past – I mean way way back in the day before all these newfangled products came along anyway –  It was a BIG score.  I have made everything from toilet fizzies to “soft scrub” to dish detergent.  But the ONE thing that I just had not been able to get just right is the dishwasher detergent.  Powder.  No.  Gel.  No.  Tabs.…

Going Green: Composting – The Final Frontier

The Green House has almost completely gone green – I’ve even started a veggie garden.  The 1 thing left that I just could not bring myself to do is compost.  I have childhood memories of having to carry watermelon rinds out to the stinky, worm and fly infested compost pile AT NIGHT and just feeling horribly icky about the whole experience.  It scarred me for life!  Until I met this little gem!  She’s so clean and pretty! Well, I thought this might kick start things, but after sitting on my counter empty for a couple of weeks, she got reassigned. To the bottom shelf of the pantry! I just wasn’t…

    Simplify your (green) cleaning

Use these 2 green cleaning recipes for everything in your home and save time and money. You’ll never go back spending a mint on the chemical + water concoctions. Super Duty Cleanser (suitable for everything except wood; wood and alcohol are NOT friends) 1-2 capfuls drops of liquid castile soap 1/4 C alcohol 1/4 C hydrogen peroxide 5-10 drops of lemon or peppermint essential oil (optional) Pour the alcohol and peroxide into a large spray bottle and fill (almost to the fill line) with water. Add the castile soap last and shake it up (so you won’t get lots of bubbles). It’s ready to use on practically anything! Spot remover…

5 Most Annoying Questions I Get About My Locs

….and my most annoying answers.  Even though these are real, I share them all in good fun. DISCLAIMER:  if you are sensitive to sarcasm, you may not want to read this post. 😉 Click here for more sarcasm free content.    Q:  I love your hair; how do you keep it so neat? A:  Well, once I find my spot under the bridge, I make absolutely sure to sleep on a satin or silk pillow. Q:  Have you ever considered going back to relaxed? A:  Hmmmm, have YOU ever considered going back to natural?  Sorry but that would be a “No”. Q:  Is it soft?  Can I touch it? (because…

    The Loc Cut

It’s Spring and I’m feeling the need for a change.  Lots of change, but I’ll just start with this. Last May, I got a loc cut – I mean a loc CUT, 4-6 inches off – and only a couple of months later I felt like I’d done nothing at all.  Well this time, I think I have learned my lesson. Anyone who knows me knows that I am NOT all about the long hair.  With my first set of locs, I started cutting them early and kept cutting them often.  It pretty much stayed like this for the first 2 years…… That strategy worked, until I just couldn’t keep…

    10 Naturalista Myths….BUSTED!

*** DISCLAIMER:  The post you are about to read is based on the experiences of 1 naturalista – ME.  Those experiences include other people but is definitely NOT inclusive of ALL natural haired folks.  It is pretty entertaining though! *** These are the top 10 questions or comments that I have encountered over the years of my napptural journey.  Some of them have sparked debates, while others are things people have told me are reasons they haven’t joined the “movement” (as if I expect EVERYone to – variety is the spice of life!).  So here they are  – ENJOY! I MUST know, understand, and advertise my hair type to go…
