Every year I reuse the same Christmas garland in different ways inside and outside our home. And since starting the “buy less, enjoy more” challenge last year, this year will be no different. While I was very tempted to replace garland that we’ve had for 5-10 years, I resisted & chose to give our Christmas garland a refresh instead.

I will say that before I challenged myself to buy less & enjoy more, I definitely took advantage of post holiday sales throughout the year. Having done that allowed me to refresh our Christmas garland at no cost this year.

And here is the final look. As you can see the garland has been revamped & decorated to coordinate with the Cultural tree in our dining room. There is another less ornate one on the opposite side of the room as well. This is what I like to call The Ancestral Display – it has photos old & new of elders (many of whom have passed on), God children, and our very first family photo.

I used a similar process to update some of my older artificial wreaths as well. I kept the wreaths much more simple this year and used fewer than in years past. I wanted a more relaxed vibe & that’s just what I achieved.

All of the original garland & wreaths are the old school pine needle type. The newer ones are the plastic-y bendable type. I think the mixture has depth & I really like the color variations.

Another thing I like to do to refresh or create my own garland is to snip branches from our “Christmas trees” in the front yard & weave them together with twine. It doesn’t last as long but it’s very pretty, vibrant, natural, and FREE!

I do hope you enjoyed this little update and that it helps you spend a little less on Christmas decor, if not this year (it’s not too late) then definitely going forward.
