Since spring has started, and outdoor decorating is on the brain, I decided to do a DIY project. I wanted to introduce a little (more) fun to the front door and I wanted something different but inexpensive. There are so many options for doormats but most are very utilitarian (like my coir mat) or just not worth the cost (small painted mats). I love the large hand painted coir mats, but these can get expensive and I wanted something I wouldn’t find on a neighbor’s doorstep (or anyone else’s for that matter).
Sooooo….
I made my own in 3 easy steps.
Tip: The technique I used works best with a small, hard bristled brush.
- Assess the current situation. This was my original coir mat – large and functional, but plain. I cleaned it well and allowed to dry completely (indoors or in garage).
- Pick the pattern or design, and roughly draw or stencil it on. Pick the colors and dive in!
- Allow the paint to dry completely (indoors or in garage), then touch up and fill in as needed.
Then sit back and enjoy the comments you get when visitors arrive…. and leave!
What a fantastic idea! What kind of paint did you use?
I used acrylic paint on this one. I’d like to try out spray paint; seems like it would be easier but require more prep in terms of taping off and such.
Thank you, I will definitely be trying this one out!
