    The Divine Nine

I want to talk to you about a serious matter.  Last night I watched an episode of Deadly Devotion on Investigation Discovery. This episode was specifically about the pledge process of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated at Eastern Carolina University. To be clear, I am not saying anything here that was not aired on national TV AND I do not speak for anyone but MYSELF.  In this episode called “Pledge for life”, 2 of 4 pledges died during “hell week” after being awake for approximately 60 hours. One of the surviving pledges, a “designated driver” so to speak, pled guilty to misdemeanor manslaughter and received several hours of community service. None of…

    Taking the Opportunity to Volunteer

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” ~~ Barack Obama   All of the most influential people in history agree that we are not put on this earth to serve ourselves. There is a greater good, there is more than just each of us, there is all of us. While browsing the blog, you may have come across a post about things that I am passionate about.  Chief among them are…

The Simplicity of the Post Holiday Home

This week, our home is very quiet – the 3 youngest children have gone back to school, and the 1 that is home is the college kid.  You know what that means…. all HE does is eat and sleep!  I already miss the crazy fun of the holidays with everyone home, but I just have to say “Ahhhhh” to the joy and simplicity of the post holiday home! All this extreme quiet made me think about the visual noise that bombards us in everyday life and especially during the holidays. On a daily basis, most of us spend countless hours online, on electronic devices, watching TV, etc.  Add to that…

9/11 Memorial Museum – A Life Changing Experience

If you ever have even the remote opportunity to go to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, TAKE IT.  It is arguably THE most emotional, most meaningful American landmark of our time.  Remembering and honoring the men, women, and children who lost their lives and the incredible valor of the first responders who “gave” theirs….  For those who were not in and around the city during that horrific time, the museum is the most incredible way to immerse yourself in the enormous intensity of the moments that changed this nation forever 13 years ago today. Enjoy! N’Ckyola \ní-ˈkō-lä\

(Very Important) Design Questions To Ask Clients

Disclaimer: What you are about to read, though actual and factual, is intended for entertainment purposes (mainly) and is NOT (exactly) meant to provide any advice to my designer cohorts.  For that, you should check out the designer questionnaire from Alycia Wicker over at Mupplebee. In the meantime, enjoy this commentary from some lessons learned early on in my career about important design questions to ask clients. How much do you want to invest in your largest investments (that is, you and your home)? In other words, what’s your budget? This is now the very first (or second) question I ask. Some people are afraid to talk budget early on. But why…

    Just Don’t

*** Before reading this post, PLEASE READ THIS “DISCLAIMER”.  I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but I can be opinionated at times.  THIS is one of those times – continue at your own risk. *** If you are a designer (or any creative type), do you ever look at other’s work and wish they just hadn’t?  Seriously, have you ever looked at pictures and thought to yourself “why?  WHYYYYYYY?”?  No need to answer this outright (although I  really would love to know), but just think about it. As a designer (whether of a room, entire home, tablescape, event space, or even system(s)), I strongly feel like professionals MUST…

    Don’t wait for something eXtraordinary…

Last week I took my littlest to Smaland (inside Ikea) and we left with a parting gift.  This caricature was drawn and painted in about 20 minutes by Ms. Reece using only items from the store of course.  She had her easel set up with paper and art supplies, and she just captured him in the moment (right down to the stripe on his pants).  It’s really quite eXtraordinary – now I’ve got to go back to Ikea to find a frame for this! If you wait for something great, you just might miss it.  Extraordinary things can happen in the most ordinary way. Enjoy! N’Ckyola \ní-ˈkō-lä\

TEXANS, is there $2 million under YOUR couch cushions?

There are some definite advantages to living in Texas.  No state income taxes, little to no snow, low cost of living, and a diverse culture.  There are others I’m sure, but there are also disadvantages like hotter than h*** summer days, hotter than h*** winter days, and Texas politics/politicians (and the folks who cover them). I don’t know who this Kronberg gentleman is, nor do I pretend to be an expert on politics (Texas or otherwise), but he apparently thinks it’s no big deal that Texas taxpayers have to foot a $2 million bill for special legislative session this year. Read more: Texans Pay Extra for Special Sessions.  I don’t know about…

Who said “n*****”?! Not Ms. Paula Deen?!

I wasn’t going to say anything about this but, I am growing very tired of it being the now 2nd top story on the news.  So, wonder of wonders, a white person has admitted to using the word nigger at some point in their life.  OMG, and will the world now come to an end?!  In case you have not heard, Paula Deen admitted to an attorney during questioning that she’d uttered the word 30 years earlier.  I am not saying that it is okay that she said it, let’s get that out of the way up front.  However, I have so many problems with all the backlash that has…
